Abstract

|
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of cultivars and cultural practices on the growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in summer culture in highland. Five cucumber cultivars consisting of ¢¥Dadagi¢¥, ¢¥Chungjang¢¥, ¢¥Heukjinju¢¥, ¢¥Backchim¢¥, and ¢¥Sayup¢¥ were used in this study. These cucumber cultivars were grown both in open field and under the rain-shelter (PE film). Growth and female flower setting were better under the rain-shelter than in open field. Lower occurrence of downy mildew was observed on cucumber plants under the rain-shelter, as compared with those in open field. In comparison among cultivars, ¢¥Dadagi¢¥ showed the most outstanding growth characteristics in both cultural practices. ¢¥Backchim¢¥ and ¢¥Dadagi¢¥ showed the highest marketable fruit yield both in open field and under rain-shelter. As compared with open field, rain-shelter was more effective for high yield and quality in summer culture of cucumber in highland.
